The plot of a story is the action.  The plot revolves around a conflict or problem.  There are five main types of conflicts:
  • Person vs. person (problem with another character)
  • Person vs. society (problem with the laws or beliefs of a group)
  • Person vs. nature (problem with force of nature such as a blizzard)
  • Person vs. self (problem with deciding what to do or think)
  • Person vs. fate (problem that seems to be uncontrollable)
That struggle builds until it reaches a crisis or a turning point.  That moment is the climax.
  1. Describe one conflict in the novel.
  2. How would you have reacted if you were facing that same conflict?
  3. Respond to a classmate's comment about the conflict.
Example: I think that the main conflict in The Summer of the Swans is that Charlie wanders off and Sara has to go find him.  This is a a person vs. person conflict because she is having a problem with another person.  I also think it might be a person vs. self because she had to decide what to do about it.  I think I would have done the same thing.  I would have felt too guilty if something had happened to him and I didn't do anything about it.

  1. mrs. Obrien I realy like sasqutch. I am on paige 51 so far my favorite part, is where Dylans Dad walks in from a long day of hunting and said is the libary open. I thought that it was random I like random things like peanutbutter and banana sandwitches. But it turns out the only reason dylans Dad said was because he wanted to go back to his office to learn more about sasquatch.

  9. Describe one conflict in the novel.
one conflct is: when dylan and buck johnson went to a cabin to look out for bill because dylan was worried about his dad. buck was afraid that bill and the team would kill the sasquatch. this is person vs person.
How would you have reacted if you were facing that same conflict?
i was buck I would save the sasqauth by hiding the sasqautch.

  10. Be careful. I am worried that this book club is confusing conflict with plot events. Remember that the conflict of a story is a problem that is being dealt with through out the whole story-- not just on a couple of pages. The characters deal with the problem for a long time and eventually solve it or fail to solve it.

I think that one conflict of this book is person vs. society-- and by society I mean a group of people with certain beliefs. I think Dylan's dad is struggling with the beliefs of Dr. Flagg and his expedition. Dylan's dad wants to protect the Sasquatch from the expedition group. Many plot events take place as he tries to reach this goal. You can point to a specific chapter where this goal is met.

  11. I think one conflict of Sasquatch might be person vs. self. Dylan is having trouble deciding how he feels about Sasquatch. Many plot events support this conflict as he struggles to decide. There is a specific plot event where he knows for sure that the Sasquatch exists-- and the conflict is resolved.

Go back and re-read some comments posted here and revise your thinking. Can you describe a conflict that is dealt with through most of the book? Can you point to a specific part of the book where the conflict is resolved?

  20. I think the conflict could possibly be;
Person vs. Nature: Because the expidition crew is on MoutnSaint Helens, while the volcano keeps setting off mini- earthqaukes. And Dylan and Buck and the whole crew has to face the ash that comes when the mini-earthquakes erupt.

Person vs. Person: Because Dylan and his dad want to try to stop Dr.Flagg from finding/killing Sasquatch.

  21. I think its person vs person. Buck vs Dr. flagg because Dr.Flagg wants to kill the sasqautch and Buck Johnson does not wan to kill him. I agree with johnny because they are trying to save the sasqautch and trying to get bill and the expedition team away from the sasqautch.

  24. I still see some misunderstandings in this blog. Remember-- a story's conflict is introduced at the beginning. (in the exposition) It is a problem the main character is trying to deal with or a goal he/she is trying to reach. It will be over arching-- meaning we will read about it throughout the whole book-- not just in one spot.

I think the main conflict of Sasquatch is Dylan trying to watch out for his dad.

The climax of a story is the big action packed scene. During this scene, something usually happens to cause a change. I think the climax is when Mt. St. Helen's erupted. This caused Kurt Skipp to die and Dylan to find his dad.

The falling action is when the conflict is resolved. I think the falling action is when Dylan and Sasquatch get his dad to safety. See-Dylan achieved his goal-- he watched out for his dad and kept him safe.
